PARENTS
Dear Parents of KIWIN’S Members,
Do you want to learn more about KIWIN’S?
Or how your child could be part of this awesome club? Well the following will hopefully answer all your questions and give you some insight to what KIWIN’S truly is and what our impact to the community is.
What is KIWIN'S?
KIWIN’S is a non-profit organization sponsored by the Kiwanis International and Key Club International. Our purpose as a club is to give back to our community by donating and volunteering our time and services. We do projects such as beach clean ups, food banks, or mini-fundraisers such as collecting for UNICEF.
What is unique about La Quinta KIWIN’S?
The KIWIN’S club at La Quinta High School is one of the most prestigious and biggest clubs on campus. Last year, we were able to bring home more than 13 awards from our District Convention, where KIWIN’S from all over California, Nevada, and Hawaii come together to compete and show how well they did over the year. Also last year we logged in a record-breaking of more than 5000 hours as a club beating that of any other club at our school. The KIWIN’S at La Quinta provides our members with the opportunity to volunteer which is very helpful when applying for college and it gives students a chance to interact with other students from other schools.
Why the fee $13?
Because we are a non-profit organization, we have to find a way to fund for our club. For each member to legally be registered under Key Club International, we have to pay a certain amount of money for each member. Furthermore, transportation will also be provided for members to projects all around our area even up to Irvine, California, therefore part of the money will compensate for the gas money. With this $13, members will receive a membership card along with a Key Club International pin as proof of their membership.
Why should my child join?
KIWIN’S is a well known club throughout California, Nevada, and Hawaii. This means that colleges know about us and recognize us at a club. There is also a college version of us called Circle K which students can further their community service activities later on in life. Also by volunteering, students are therefore logging in service hours. These service hours can go to applying for not only colleges but also scholarships that are offered to service devoted students. Meaning the more hours your child logs in, the more opportunity there are for scholarships to pay for college. Furthermore, the KIWIN’S District also offers end-of-the-year scholarships to a group of students that have made an impact in the KIWIN’S family. These scholarships can go as high as $21000. KIWIN’S also gives your child the chance to interact with other students and experience everyday life and learn about everyday hardships that some face.
Can KIWIN’S really help my child with college?
Once again, KIWIN’S is the best kind of help you can get for your child for college. It’s an extracurricular activity that can be used to impress admission judges on college applications. Also, students may also be able to visit college campuses that have a Circle K and learn more about that college for instance UCI. This can help students realize what college they would like to attend. Furthermore, community service definitely scores big points with the college admissions.
How can I help my child be more involved?
Each weekend, either on a Saturday or Sunday (sometimes both), our club provide community service opportunities for members to participate in. You as parents can encourage your child to sign up for these projects during our meetings every Thursdays. If a child signs up for a project AND receives a call the following day as reminder, the child must show up as school on time for the call time and will be transported to the volunteer location.
How can I participate in this club?
Parents, you too are an essential part in the KIWIN’S club. You can help our club by providing rides to volunteer projects that your child is attending. OR you can attend projects such as Rose Parade as chaperones. Furthermore, parents can help us fundraise by attending our numerous fundraisers such as Ice-Skating, Restaurant Fundraisers where we will receive a percentage of your bill, Recycling newspaper for us, etc. But above all, the best way to help our club is to encourage your child to be active and contribute in helping out our community.
The answers above are only a few important ones. If you have ANY other questions that you want answered before your child joins our club, please don’t hesitate to email us. Or you can read up on our history and FAQs! If you are interested in our club, please tell your child to fill out a membership application AND SOAP form, both found in the Resource Link and return it to us at the meeting every Thursday with the fee of $15.
